Frequently asked questions about carpet cleaning

  1. Do you clean carpets?
Yes. Dudley's Corporation specialises in the expert cleaning of all types of carpets and floor coverings and upholstery.
  2. Why do you charge per square metre?
We charge by the square metre because compared to a flat 'per room' charge, it is fair to our customers as rooms vary greatly in size. Cleaning price is also determined by the type of carpet, degree of soiling and amount of time needed. To ensure correct cleaning for each individual job, we offer a free, no obligation Pre- Service Inspection.
  3. What method is used to clean carpets?
While our treatment recommendation is based upon the information compiled by our Carpet Inspector during Pre-Service Inspection, we generally suggest the hot water extraction method, sometimes referred to as steam cleaning.
  4. Why Hot Water Extraction method?
The hot water extraction method, also referred to as steam cleaning, is recommended by most carpet manufacturers and certain carpets require this method to fulfil their warranties. Besides doing the best job of cleaning, hot water extraction is also recommended for improving the indoor environment.
  5. Are the carpets wet after cleaning?
Carpet cleaning drying times will depend on room temperature. Usually after deep cleaning work is completed, carpets will be damp from 4 to 8 hours however badly soiled or stained carpet requiring a repeated deep clean may take overnight to dry. As a general precaution we recommend small children and pets be kept off the carpets until they are completely dry. Dudley's Corporation offers an optional service to speed dry carpets with specially designed air movers.
  6. Can you remove the odour and stains caused by pet 'accidents'?
We specialise in removing stains caused by pets. As long as the carpet dye has not been damaged, in most cases we can remove the spots and deodorise to significantly minimise odour. During Pre-Inspection, our Carpet Cleaning Inspector can test the carpet to determine the degree of restoration you can expect. While we do everything possible to reduce or eliminate pet odours, due to depth of contamination 100% success may not be attainable. Also, for several days after cleaning an elevated odour due to higher humidity levels and 'off gassing' may be noticeable.
I've heard that carpets re-soil quickly after cleaning. Is that true?
Unlike the early on-location shampooing methods used over ten years ago that left a sticky residue quickly causing re-soiling of carpets after cleaning, today's equipment and the refined rinsing agents we use leave carpets almost residue free. This is particularly true of the hot water extraction method. Frequent cleaning actually extends carpet life and is recommended by most manufacturers and the EPA.
  7. Do I need Scotchgard on my carpet?
Scotchgard is an excellent investment. Besides protecting your carpet against spills and soils, Scotchgard gives you an excellent stain protection warranty and Scotchgard-treated carpets respond better to future cleaning.
  8. I was told that as my carpet is wool, I should be careful how it is cleaned. Is this true?
You are right to be concerned. Wool carpets are beautiful, expensive and require specialised chemicals and cleaning. Our technicians test carpet fibres before cleaning to determine correct methods and we use ProChem Australia products which are 'Wool safe Approved'.
We enjoy cleaning natural fibres including wool, because it gives our technicians the opportunity to really shine.
  9. What about my furniture during cleaning?
We recommend that clients move all items of furniture they want us to clean under. Furniture that is loaded very heavily, such as bookcases or china cabinets, can be left in place and we can edge around these. If furniture has legs and sufficient clearance for our machine to pass beneath, we can probably clean some way underneath it without moving it. Furniture requirements, including moving of some furniture by arrangement, can be discussed and arranged at Pre-Service Inspection during which, our Carpet Inspector works with our client to map out a 'plan of attack' that includes managing furniture.
  10. What do I need to do to prepare for the cleaning?
    We suggest that you:
    1. Move furniture as per prior arrangement with our Carpet Inspector during Pre-Service Inspection
    2. Pin up full length draperies to be at least 6 inches off the floor or remove them
    3. Pin up skirts on upholstered furniture which may be touching the carpet
    4. Remove from furniture all breakable items such as vases and ornaments
    5. Remove small items, such as dining chairs, magazine racks and pot plants from carpet to be cleaned
    6. Alert our technician any spots or stains that may require particular attention or special techniques
    7. Put pets in a safe, quiet place where our cleaning won't disturb them
    8. Keep children away from area during cleaning
    9. Advise the technician of any particular requirements you may have

Carpet Cleaning

Today there are three recognised methods used to clean carpets. Type and soiling of carpet will determine choice of one of the following methods -

  1. Carpet Steam Cleaning (Hot Water Extraction)
Dudley's Corporation's fleet of truck-mounted hot water extraction equipment has the most technologically advanced HWE system available. With temperatures reaching over 240 degrees under 3000 lbs of pressure, our equipment can extract problems beyond the capabilities of other systems and our knowledge in chemistry and environmental sciences further ensures a safe and healthy environment.
    High Performance Portable Extraction (HPPE)
Factors such as security, access or location can limit access for use of truck-mounted equipment. Dudley's Corporation has the technology to offer clients services using the most powerful High Performance Portable Extraction (HPPE) equipment available. Rotary extraction heads with the proper chemistry ensure our portable equipment outperforms other portable options.
  2. Dry Fusion Cleaning / Bonnet Cleaning (Dry Cleaning)
The patented Dry Fusion system is the ultimate method of removing soil safely. It is a pH neutral (pH 7.2) process that combines the best features of hot water extraction (hot solution, 'Shot of steam') and the best features of Dry Cleaning (low moisture, mechanical agitation) with a hot cleaning rotary pad system that constantly heats fibres to deep clean the carpet and remove deep-set stains while fusing a fluoro-based stain protector and blocking resin to every fibre as it is heat dried. Whether to commercial or domestic application, Dry Fusion provides the safest, longest lasting clean and leaves carpet resistant to dust, dirt and grime and because it is patented, Dry Fusion is the only system in the world that can clean carpets this way.

During Dry Fusion cleaning, carpets are treated with Bactoshield Protection. While Bactoshield has a powerful cleaning action that deals effectively with traffic lane yellowing on carpet tiles and olefin fibre, difficult stains such as oily liniments, medicines, crayons and make-up and removes resistant odours such as urine, vomit, body odour, ammonia and pet smells, it is safe to use. During cleaning, Bactoshield bonds a water-proof, antimicrobial protective coating containing a 'Triclosan' shield, to each fibre. Triclosan is a safe, non-toxic chemical that has been used in toothpaste and medical products for years. It helps prevent the growth of hundreds of bacterial strains, moulds, fungi and tinea as well as problem bacteria like E-Coli and Staph Aureas. This is the most effective product on the market that can provide cleaning and be equal in antimicrobial effectiveness. Bactoshield provides the risk management that our customers need for public liability.

Features of the Dry Fusion/Bonnet Cleaning method are:

    • Quiet operation - unlike most other carpet cleaning systems, Dry Fusion is a whisper quiet system. So it is particularly advantageous in hospitals and commercial buildings. Our commercial clients value that carpets can be cleaned during office hours.
    • Quick drying - carpet is bone dry in less than half an hour
    • Longer lasting results - Two unique factors work to keep Dry Fusion cleaned carpet stain-free and maintain that just cleaned look, longer. A unique additive, fluorocarbon resin, places an invisible protective shield over every fibre during the cleaning process. It helps prevent dry grit, mud, dust and spills - even oily spills, lodging within the carpet. Dry Fusion cleaned fibres are effectively 'non-stick', so vacuuming is easier and more effective. The fluorocarbon resin helps block dye sites in the fibre that normally allow food spills and beverages to become ugly stains. When re-cleaned with Dry Fusion using the 'shot of steam', most stains are removed without spotting or agitation.
    • Low-irritant scent - The natural orange and vanilla extracts used as odour neutralisers have been selected for their low-irritant qualities so ideal for those with sensitive noses or bronchial problems.
    • Environmental Safety - All emulsifiers and greasy soil solubisers are highly biodegradable and degrade rapidly to meet Australian and O.E.C.D standards.

Dry Fusion / Bonnet Cleaning is especially suited to the following carpet applications:

    • Carpet Tiles - carpet tiles are susceptible to particular problems such as water staining on tile edges from wick-back caused by excessive water and aggressive cleaning, difficult to remove yellowing in traffic lanes due to detergent residues, 'black stain' and delimitation caused by some solvent-based extraction pre-sprays that can also dissolve the binder holding the fibres. These problems are avoided and best results are achieved on carpet tiles with the Dry Fusion method.
    • New Generation Fibres - carpets made from new generation fibres, particularly Olefin (polypropylene) fibres, are extremely sensitive to sticky detergent residues that attract oily and walked-in soil. Stain treated nylon is particularly sensitive to high pH cleaners which degrade the life of the coating. The Dry Fusion method is ideal for application to new generation fibres as it does not rely on a high pH chemicals or wetting of the carpet by water flushing.
    • Wool Fibre - wool is a very porous fibre that benefits greatly from the application of Dry Fusion stain protection. Tufted carpets are most predominant and provide the ultimate test for the Dry Fusion process. With no wick-back of stains you can guarantee a brightness, cleanness and softness not available through any other process.

Please note: Certain food colours used in Indian and Asian foods and soft drink, actually dye the carpet and cannot be removed with Dry Fusion Activator.

Dry Fusion, with its unique features, is particularly beneficial for the following areas:

    • Commercial premises
    • Hospitals and healthcare facilities
    • Sporting facilities
    • Day care / child care centres
    • Residential facilities
    • Pubs and clubs
    • Homes
  3. Encapsulation Cleaning
Dudley's Corporation introduced Encapsulation Cleaning to ensure we offer our customers a full range of leading technologies in carpet cleaning. Encapsulation is a perfect choice for customers with high-traffic or large commercial settings with the need to clean their carpeted surfaces in an on-going manner. While the results are exceptional, the costs are typically lower than those of other methods.
Of the two main types of soil to which carpets are exposed, Dry Soil and Sticky Soil, routine vacuuming will remove most dry soil however sticky and oily soils adhere to and hold the dry soils in the carpet no matter what size vacuum is used. Encapsulation technology effectively and efficiently removes sticky soils and stains adhering to carpet by forming dry microscopic crystals that surround sticky soils with an acrylic-polymer barrier that prevents them from reattaching to fibres while being drawn to the surface using controlled evaporation. The encapsulated soil particles are dislodged and released from the carpet fibre and easily extracted as a dry particulate by normal routine vacuuming. This immediately allows the carpet to return to its original orientation so that it looks its best, not just after cleaning, but between cleanings. Approved by all major carpet mills, encapsulation cleaning is ideally suited to commercial grade olefin, polyester and nylon surfaces.
Encapsulation cleaning is very safe to use. The only ingredient even required to be listed on an MSDS sheet is Isopropyl Alcohol which evaporates away. It is PH neutral in diluted form. It is safe to use on synthetic fibres, most wool and any other fibre that can be exposed to water.

There are five benefits to incorporating a fluoro-chemical protector during encapsulation:

    1. Encapsulating crystal releases more easily from the fibre
    2. Surface tension of the detergent is lowered, increasing wetting and cleaning ability
    3. Anti-wicking properties are greatly improved
    4. Carpet will be more soil-resistant
    5. The tea tree extract leaves a light, fresh, clean healthy scent

Dry cleaning of curtains, mattresses & upholstery cleaning

Dudley's Corporation uses the AmeriVap One Step Dry Steam Cleaning and Sanitising System to clean upholstery, mattresses and drapery. This includes the treatment and removal of stains and soiled areas with the use of dry steam. Dry steam is super-heated steam which does not contain any water in suspension. Without the use of chemicals it effectively kills dust mites, while removing stains and odours.

With the exceptions of silk and certain very delicate fabrics which can be damaged by heat alone, superheated water vapour is safe to use. Most fabrics that shrink do so because of exposure to hot water that soaks the fibres and subjects them to high residual heat but the moisture content of the AmeriVap vapour is so low that heat dissipates quickly so it will not damage or shrink fabrics.
The AmeriVap system effectively cleans almost any surface type by combining the following natural forces:

  1. Heat - this weakens the physical bond that holds dirt and stains to surfaces. The AmeriVap produces vaporised water, held at around 290 degrees F inside the system's heating tank.
  2. Water - nature's most perfect solvent. The AmeriVap converts water to 94% dry, superheated dry steam vapour.
  3. Scrubbing action - applied to the surface by using an array of attachments. Hard scrubbing is not necessary.

At this point a fourth natural force removes the stain and dirt particles; the natural flow of water in the direction of least resistance. The superheated steam vapour is passed through towels made of cotton which is more absorbent and offers less resistance than almost any other type of material. The towel becomes hot, but just slightly moist and 'sucks up' everything suspended in the resulting water droplets, so the removed dirt is embedded into the fibres of the towel
Long-term exposure to many household cleaning chemicals and their associated waste is now beginning to be understood and linked to various detrimental effects. The AmeriVap System is environmentally safe, using only potable water heated to over 290 degrees F and distilled during use. The system does not introduce toxic substances or use any chemicals, solvents, chlorines, germicides, pesticides or herbicides. A steam vapour system such as the Amerivap system eliminates risks associated with chemicals, so is completely safe to use.
The AmeriVap System we use cleans, sanitises and deodorises simultaneously, leaving no chemical residue and this proven process is the most effective method of sanitising known today. The hot steam vapour penetrates the pores of materials cleaned to destroy mould spores, bacteria, viruses and germs of all kinds.
As well as germs and viruses, we are continually exposed to the residue from the millions of dust mites that live in clothing, bedding, carpets and upholstery. Research has shown that excrement from dust mites plays a major role in many respiratory problems and indoor air pollution. The only known way to destroy dust mites is by the use of very high temperature live steam vapour; hence the AmeriVap System is uniquely beneficial in reducing allergens and irritants to respiratory ailments.
Wherever sanitary matters are important to ensure a healthy environment, Dudley's Corporation can provide the services required to maintain sparkling clean and sanitary surfaces in all areas including:

  • Residential facilities
  • Commercial premises
  • Accommodation - hotels, motels
  • Day care / child care centres

The Amerivap System used by Dudley's Corporation is a chemical-free system, so is particularly beneficial for the following applications:

  • Kitchens - surfaces including counter tops, stoves, ovens, refrigerators, cutting boards
  • Bathrooms - showers, baths, basins, tiles
  • Bedrooms - sanitising of mattresses, pillows
